Program Areas...............................................................................

1) Water and Toxics: to protect rivers, lakes, wetlands, oceans, and other water systems from contamination, degradation, and other abuses. Examples include strengthening organizations that address the protection of water systems, stopping further degradation caused by new dams or diversions, reducing wasteful water use, promoting the allocation of water specifically for environmental purposes (including habitat restoration, and fish and wildlife protection) supporting efforts to improve public policies affecting waste protection, reducing pesticide use, and strengthening organizations addressing the disproportionate use and locating of toxic materials in poor and rural areas.
2) Air Quality, Energy, and Transportation: to protect the atmosphere and other natural resources by promoting energy efficiency, renewable energy and improved transportation policies and practices. Examples include promoting alternatives to increased single-occupancy vehicle use, improving air quality through decreasing pollutants from production and use of fossil fuels, and reducing the overall consumption of fossil fuel-based and nuclear-generated energy.
3) Habitat: to defend biodiversity by protecting natural habitats. Examples include protecting habitats with particular emphasis on locally developed strategies for private and public lands; defending wild places from destructive processes like mining and over-grazing; promoting understanding of the relationship between wildlife, habitat protection, and long-term economic stability; and protecting forest ecosystems through reducing wood consumption and promoting safe, sustainable non-wood alternatives.
4) Population: to promote worldwide development of policies and practices which will reduce population growth by addressing the relationships between population growth, global resources, the status of women and girls, and access to family planning and reproductive health services. Examples include promoting access to safe, affordable family-planning and reproductive health services; addressing the relationship between population growth, the low status of women and girls, consumption of natural resources, and environmental degradation; and supporting activities that focus on women and girls and provide for their improved status in society.
