Program Areas...............................................................................

Program areas include:
1) Banning land mines: grants to support research, advocacy, coalition building, and media work needed internationally and in the U.S.
2) Preventing armed conflict: supports behind the scenes efforts to convene direct, off-the-record talks between adversaries, and to develop links between analysts and scientists across hostile borders. Also seeks to support projects that promote practical policy measures to curb the spread of light weapons, and projects that examine the role of United Nations peacekeeping and research into underlying causes of conflict.
3) Restraining the weapons trade: supports lobbying and advocacy organizations that are calling for a national and international "code of conduct" restricting weapons sales to countries that do not uphold the principles of democracy, human rights, non-aggression, and participation in the UN Conventional Arms Register. The Fund also supports individuals and organizations that provide critical research and information on global arms transfers to policymakers, the media and the public.
4) Cleaning up the radioactive environment: (in the former Soviet Union) supports the development of an indigenous network of citizens' groups who are facing great environmental challenges caused by production of nuclear weapons in their countries.
5) Fighting nuclear terrorism and proliferation: (special campaign) to support efforts to work toward the elimination of nuclear weapons; support organizations and individuals promoting international treaties to halt the testing of nuclear weapons or the production of nuclear weapons fuels, and programs that develop regional security measures aimed at controlling the spread of nuclear weapons. The Ploughshares Fund also has a unique program supporting analysts and grassroots activists in the former Soviet Union who are working to prevent the spread of nuclear materials and technology from their region.
